About

Jan Shiksha Bhavan (JSB), Gaunaha is an extension center of The Charitable Association for Rural Education and Development (READ), Bettiah. Right based perspective, participatory approach, networking and collaboration and grass root advocacy are the broad perspectives on which the empowerment actions are undertake. Jan Shiksha Bhavan has been working for the empowerment, development, entitlements and rights of the socially excluded and marginalized people especially Musahars, Oraons and Tharus through Supplementary Educational Centers (SECs), SHGs, Tailoring centers, street plays in the remote areas of Gaunaha and Ramnagar Blocks.

JSB believed from the very beginning that education is an integral part of the empowerment process. Hence non-formal education programmes were the first initiatives of JSB 27 years ago in Gaunaha Block. Many adult literacy programmes were implemented among the Tharus. Legal awareness programmes were conducted for the community mobilizers. Social analysis and conscientization processes were carried out for the Tharus so that they could articulate their views and perspectives for better self-governance.

Self Help Groups and tailoring centers were aiming at economic empowerment of the poor households. Supplementary Education Centers (SECs) were set up to ensure quality education for the children while working with the government system and making an impact on the system.

Testimonials

Fr. Babu Jagadeepan, SJ
Jan Shiksha Bhavan

My experience in JSB, Gaunaha since 2016 has been one of fulfilment. Gaunaha, being one of the remotest Blocks situated in Indo-Nepal border is very backward. With our work spread to villages has brought social transformation since 1992. I as the director of JSB believe that ensuring quality education among the Tharus and Musahars would indeed become the most powerful instrument for their integral liberation and empowerment. It would certainly give them power to question and challenge the oppressive systems such as caste, class, feudalism, patriarchy and unjust political, economic and religious-cultural systems.

Jan Shiksha Bhavan

I am Saxena Devi. I am working as a social worker of Jan Shiksha Bhavan (JSB) since 1993. I joined JSB as a Non-Formal Education (NFE) teacher 27 years ago. What I cherish most as a social worker is the developed that has taken place in Gaunaha Block due to JSB. The socio-economic, political and educational scenario of this area was very disheartening 27 years ago. That time there was hardly anyone who was literate in my village. Nobody was convinced of the importance of education. People were skeptical about JSB’s intervention among the Tharus of Indo-Nepal border. With the commitment and dedication of JSB staff I saw some hope among the villagers.
