It came as a sudden shock, without warning. Fr. James seemed to be in good health, and was carrying on his duties as administrator of the Bodhgaya Jesuit community. He had gone out in the morning, and after lunch went for a siesta. When he didn’t awake for tea, Br. Vetti went to his room, and found him dead on the bed. It was not only a shock, but a personal loss to all of us who knew him.
James was a very cheerful person, and always greeted us with a smile. He didn’t complain, and seemed to be strong enough to meet any challenge or assignment that was given him. A very dependable person. This is shown by the responsibilities that he was given: as socius to the novice master (1984-87), pastor at Sasaram (1987-91), superior and pastor at Ara (1991-94), minister at St. Xavier’s, Patna (1995-97), superior and pastor at Itarhi (1997-2003), minister at St. Michael’s (2003-05), pastor at Darbhanga (2005-08) and finally administrator at Bodhgaya (2008-09). In all these assignments, he was quiet, competent and very helpful.
It is an understatement to say that James will be missed. Not only for the capable work he did for the Jesuit province and the people of Bihar, but for his presence among us. We will miss his friendly smile and greeting. And we trust that the Lord returned a smile and a warm welcome to James, and a rich reward for his labours.
